The Ball Family takes the stage at their ranch

Are you looking for a down home Texas time? If you are, then why not visit the Ball Ranch in Abilene, Texas for a good home-cooked barbeque meal? Yes, you can take your family to the Ball Ranch located just on the outskirts of Abilene and join in on their Chuckwagon Supper and Western Stage Show.

When it comes to country and western music, the Ball Family has a rich history. Gary’s father was a renowned guitar and fiddle player, cranking out classics for more than 50 years. Evidently, he passed his love of music and well-known melodies on to his son. Sounds of a classic piano filled Sue’s home as a little girl – with songs her mother played. She was also exposed to the familiar melodies of western swing, which her father played in a Swing Band for just a $1 a day in the 1930s. You could say it was a match made in music history when Gary and Sue married in 1965 and carried on the musical legacy with their children. Members of their entire family have sung together for over twenty years.

If you venture out to the Ball Ranch, you’ll be treated to a true Texas atmosphere. The family’s show began in one of their small barns on the property years ago. They now offer a large, open facility that can accommodate up to 250. If you attend, you won’t want to miss out on their delicious barbeque – cooked and served by the Ball Ranch Family. They generally offer slow-cooked, mesquite-smoked barbeque meat entrees, red beans, potato salad, and all the trimmings – including fresh biscuits with honey and butter. After your main course, kick back with a big glass of iced tea or lemonade and polish off some homemade peach cobbler. You’ll be too stuffed to move – and that is a good thing because the show follows the family-style meal!

The show features a medley of timeless country favorites and the family’s original songs. If you’re looking for hand-clapping, foot-stomping, get-up-out-of-your-seat and dance, kind of show – you’re in luck – this is the place to be! You can catch the show April through December (and off-season, when weather permits) on Saturdays from 7-9 p.m. The Ball Ranch Family also spends their time recording (they just released a new CD called ‘Texas to a T’) and touring. If you’d like a sneak peek of their music, tune into RFD-TV on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. and again on Friday, Feb. 25 at 9 a.m.
