Munchies is a “groovy,” new mom-and-pop (or sister-and-sister-in-law, I should say) burger joint that opened recently in Abilene, Texas. With beads framing the doors to old 33s adorning the walls, this place really has the ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia and transport you back in time.

Located minutes from Sayles Boulevard, at 4021 S. 7th St., Munchies is known for just that – a variety of munchies! Their menu differs from day-to-day. Some days, these retired rodeo queens-turned-chefs will cook up barbeque and on others they’ll serve up hot ham and cheese sandwiches. However, I’d say they’re best known for their delicious burgers and hand sliced fries. You can definitely tell that they care about what they’re serving patrons. The burgers don’t taste processed or frozen like a fast-food chain – they’re fresh and juicy, like they are hot off the grill at a backyard cookout.

My favorite things about Munchies: 1) you grab your drinks out of a bright orange vintage refrigerator yourself and 2) their selection of homemade baked goods. These ladies make different items, such as: red velvet cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, fudge, mini tie-dye cakes and even themed items – “Route 66 Cream Cheese Cake.” One can definitely tell that the owners have fun with what they do daily.

Prices range from $0.25 to $6.99 – extremely affordable for the portions and quality that you receive. Munchies Diner is also known to have free live music on any given day. They’re open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and they deliver, folks. For updates, check them out on Facebook or call 325-675-6862. If you visit or call, you’re sure to smile – they even say, “Have a groovy day!”
