Love is in the Abilene air as Valentine’s Day approaches. Get in the romantic spirit with some of these events Abilene offers this next week or be like me, pretend the holiday doesn’t exist and you’ll still find something to do for everyone!

Scrambling to find a Valentine? Head on over to the Sleep Inn and Suites for a “Speed Dating Event” extravaganza. You’ll have the opportunity to  enjoy up to 20 dates in one night. This event is for men and woman aged 32-45 but everyone will have a chance to be included in an age group in future events. Table space is limited to 20 ladies and 20 gentlemen. You will have 4 minutes per date, which let’s be honest, can be way too long for some dates, but is still enough time great opportunity to make new friends and enjoy some new experiences.  The merriment begins at 6:30 and costs $35 per person. If you can’t be a part of this one, call 325-267-1160 to learn more about future events.

A West Side Story in West Texas? Yep! Prepare for Valentine’s Day by getting in the romantic spirit with this modern love story.  The 2010 Grammy Award winning musical has been winning audiences over for more than 50 years. This classic love story in musical form will captivate you with fighting, dancing, modern gangs and betrayal…so kind of like high school but with more signing.  Ok, obviously this is yet another cinematic and now Broadway masterpiece I have yet to see so I’m excited I will have the opportunity  to head on down to the Civic Center. Being a terrible, yet avid singer, I am familiar with some of the show’s popular tunes like “Something’s Coming”, “Tonight”, “America” and my every morning anthem, “I Feel Pretty.”  Show time is Wednesday at 7:30 pm. Ticket prices vary.  Call the Civic Center at 325-676-2556 or 800—869-1451 for tickets.

The 34th Annual Bud Light World of Wheels rolls into the Abilene Civic Center this Friday thru Sunday. I have fond memories of attending the world of wheels in my childhood and our boys are no different!  Even if you don’t think of yourself as a car officiando, you’ll love perusing the world class selection of local and out of town ISCA competitors. No appreciation will be lost as you picture yourself behind the hot rods, original custom cars, racing cars, motorcycles and more.  The photo opportunities are endless! Please note they sometimes frown on acting out movies scenes in their custom cars, but you can’t bring a baby blue convertible and not expect someone to go a little Thelma. Times are 6 pm to 10 pm Friday, 10 am to 10om Saturday and noon to 7 pm Sunday.   Admission prices vary. Call 325-676-6211 to learn more.

The Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra Classical Concert will be this Saturday in the Abilene Civic Center Concert Hall at 8 pm. Enjoy sophisticated and moving classics like Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Elgar’s Cello Concerto and Mozart’s Symphony No.  41. Ticket prices vary from $10-25, so you can enjoy these masterpieces on any budget. Get gussied up, enjoy a night at the symphony and stay downtown to enjoy a nightcap or dessert at Abilene’s latest downtown eatery Abi-Haus, a beloved downtown staple Cypress Street or say hi to my favorite brothers at the Beehive.  It will be a true Abilene experience kind of night.

Happy memory makin’, y’all!
