If you want to plan a full day of fun, head to historic downtown Abilene this Saturday, April 13th to attend B!G DAY DOWNTOWN, brought to you by the Abilene Downtown Association. The weather forecast is for a pleasant 76°, perfect for a day of shopping, dining, museums and galleries and movies.

Discover downtown’s 17 locally-owned shops. You can find everything from antiques to shoes, special boutiques to Texas gifts, items from around the world to locally handcrafted goods, fine jewelry to fine art and designer furniture to one of-a-kind pieces. Look for sidewalk sales and special promotions. Don’t forget to register at each shop for a chance to win a downtown gift basket.

Have lunch and a brew at Cypress Street Station and Abilene Brewing Company, Abilene’s only microbrewery, or check out downtown’s newest hip restaurant Abi-Haus. Other great places for lunch are McKay’s, Bogie’s Deli and The Loft at Under One Roof.

Did I hear free or half price admission? After lunch, shop some more but save some time to visit the NCCIL (free), Cedar Break Gallery (free), The Center for Contemporary Arts (free), Cockerell Galleries and Studios (free) and The Grace Museum (1/2 price admission). Get $1 off admission at the 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum or get $2 off admission to Frontier Texas! and check out their new exhibit “Blood & Treasure on the Frontier.” The Abilene Public Library also has a free family activity starting at 2 p.m.

In the evening, plan for dinner and a movie. Open for dinner is Abi-Haus, Cypress St. Station & Abilene Brewing Company, and The Beehive. Enjoy “Mogambo” at the historic Paramount Theatre, 352 Cypress St., at 7:30 p.m. This classic film stars Clark Gable and Ava Gardner and is an action, adventure, romance that was directed by John Ford.

It might be too much to do all this in one day. So plan another fun day in historic downtown Abilene. You will be glad you did!
