ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Sports Alliance is proud to announce the line-up for the 12th annual Action Zone Champions Classic. The Classic is promoted by the Abilene Sports Alliance, a committee under the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Sports Alliance was formed to increase the economic impact in the Abilene community through sporting events. In addition, another goal is to raise money for scholarships awarded each year to graduating seniors from each of the local high schools. Over a decade later the Classic is now their signature event. “So many great memories have been made with the matchups we’ve had each year,” Doug McIntyre, Sports Alliance Chair said. “Yes, the football has been legendary and we are proud that our Classic has become a nationally recognized, respected event, but we remain steadfast in our goal to help local high school athletes pursue higher education.” To date $100,000 has been awarded in scholarships to high school graduates. The line-up for the Classic promises more authentic West Texas football with high quality teams taking the field at Shotwell August 25-27. The first game kicks off at 7:30 pm Thursday between Hamlin and Anson, Friday, at 7:30 pm Cooper will take on Keller, and the final game in the Classic is a six man match up between Abilene Christian High and Weatherford Christian Saturday at 6 pm. Players and fans from each area will pour into Abilene to see the games. The ACVB estimates that close to $115,000 will be pumped into the Abilene economy because of the Action Zone Championship Classic. The ACVB and the Sport Alliance encourage the public to attend the games and cheer on local teams to support the event. “Abilene is known throughout the state for tremendous football, but also our gracious southern hospitality,” Debi Schultz, Sales Director for the ACVB. “By coming out to these games we show our guests that we appreciate their business in our community.” The Action Zone Champions Classic games are included in season tickets; prices vary by game at the gate.
